The Challenge
Lancaster University wanted to generate electricity on site to reduce its reliance on purchased grid electricity. The proposed installation was initially intended for a new building, but its construction meant the solar PV system needed to be installed on a neighbouring building instead.

The available space was spread across three roofs, covering approximately 250 square metres. Existing rooftop equipment added further constraints, requiring a carefully planned layout. Alongside the physical design challenges, the university needed specialist support with the technical assessment and documentation required before installation could begin.

The Solution
Square 4 Solar surveyed the site and assessed the existing electrical equipment alongside half-hourly electricity consumption data supplied by the university. This information informed the proposed system size and helped the team develop a design around the available roof space and the building’s electricity requirements.

The resulting proposal was a 49kWp ballasted flat-roof solar PV system, with estimated annual generation of 42,210kWh. The bespoke layout accommodated the three roof areas and worked around existing equipment.

Our team also handled the Distribution Network Operator application on the client’s behalf, obtaining permission to connect the system to the local electricity network before installation commitments were made.
The Results
Square 4 Solar designed, supplied and installed the 49kWp solar PV system, putting existing roof space to use for on-site electricity generation. The installation combined Longi solar panels with a 50kW inverter, mounted externally to provide access for future maintenance.

The completed installation demonstrates how a tailored retrofit design can accommodate several roof areas and existing building constraints. Its predicted annual generation was 42,210kWh, providing the university with an additional source of electricity for its estate.
