The Challenge
University Hospital of North Tees required solar PV installations in two areas as part of a major refurbishment and energy infrastructure upgrade. One array would be installed on an existing roof and the other on a new-build energy centre, bringing renewable electricity generation into the hospital estate.

Working within a busy NHS environment required careful planning to protect patient safety, maintain ambulance access and avoid disruption to critical services. The two roofs also presented different technical requirements: one was tiled and the other used standing seam construction, requiring a suitable mounting system for each.

The Solution
Square 4 Solar provided pre-project analysis of costs, energy generation and carbon savings, alongside recommendations on installation methods. This helped establish the approach for delivering two solar arrays across the different roof types.
The team developed an installation programme around the hospital’s operational and safety requirements, selecting mounting arrangements appropriate to each roof. Square 4 Solar also advised the NHS Trust on integrating the solar PV system with the hospital’s fire safety systems so generation could be switched off in an emergency.

Commissioning included the G59 grid connection acceptance process, working with the project consultants, NHS Trust and Distribution Network Operator’s witnessing engineer.
The Results
Square 4 Solar completed the 250kWp installation in late 2017, delivering the project to programme despite severe weather during the six-week installation period. Both arrays were commissioned successfully, with the project’s technical director praising the commissioning engineer’s knowledge and the smooth acceptance of the grid connection.
Following commissioning, the arrays performed reliably and delivered the expected savings for the hospital. The completed project demonstrates how solar PV can be delivered across different roof types within a working healthcare estate, supported by careful planning and close coordination with the wider project team.
